HUMANITARIAN VALUES IN SHEIKH SAADI’S POETRY

Summary:

Bani Aadam Aaza-e-Yekdigrand (The sons of Adam are limbs of each other)…..starting with these verses, Prof. Kamaluddin explained various aspects of humanitarian values in Saadi’s writings. Saadi is recognized in the literary world for the quality of his writing style and in the spiritual realm for the depth of his thoughts. Picking up verses and quotes from his writings, Prof. Kamaluddin explained Saadi’s vision of world peace and universal brotherhood. He said that Saadi’s verses are relevant even in contemporary times. At a time when issues such as terrorism, racism, discrimination and violence have become so rampant, it is pertinent to study and propagate Sadi’s idea of peace, love and brotherhood. The contemporary relevance of Sasdi’s verses can be assessed from the fact that his verses have been used to decorate the entrance of the main building of United Nations. In the end of this lecture Prof. Kamaluddin answered various questions put forward by the students. The session was chaired by Prof. Mujawar Hussain Rizwi, and ended with vote of thanks by Dr. Jawaid Akhtar.

RELEVANCE OF PERSIAN STUDIES AND RESEARCH IN CONTEMPORARY INDIA

Summary:

Prof. Asifa Zamani outlined the contributions of some of the prominent Indian Researchers in the field of Persian Literature and said that Indian Scholars have played significant role in revival of Persian Literature. Prof. Zamani presented a comprehensive briefing on contributions of Allama Shibli Naomani, Syed Sulaiman Nadvi, Hafiz Mahmood Shirani, Prof. Nazir Ahmad, Syed Amir Hasan Abidi and others to elaborate upon opportunities in the area of research in Persian Studies. She also inspired the students to be friends with books and libraries. We are living in the Information age and Internet sources can of immense help for learning and research, she said. Prof. Malikzada Manzoor Ahmad chaired the session and the lecture ended with question answer session wherein students ensured their active participation.

BEDIL WA SABK-E-HINDI

Summary:

Mirza Abdul Qadir Bedil was a famous representative of Persian poetry and Sufism in India. He is considered the most difficult and challenging poet of the Indian school of Persian poetry. Dr. Zafar is a renowned scholar on Bedil Shenasi and has written a very popular book on Bedil. In his Lecture on the subject he outlined the special features of Sabk-e-Hindi and described how this style of writing was different from other trends in Persian literature. Citing various verses of Bedil he explained how Bedil was first neglected by Iranian researchers and what were the circumstances in which his writings/verses got acceptance in Afghanistan and Central Asia. He also placed assessment of various renowned poets such as Ghalib on Bedil’s Poetry. Dr. Zafar also explained in details the contributions of various researchers who brought Bedil’s writings to fore and helped in getting him the recognition that he duly deserved. The session ended with vote of thanks presented by Dr. Md. Jawaid Akhtar.
